Reported Leeds United target Sergio Romero is a high-calibre player who has Jose Mourinho’s seal of approval, the Portuguese previously describing the 33-year-old as “fantastic”.

According to ESPN, Leeds could be interested in bringing the Manchester United second-choice goalkeeper to Elland Road, despite just signing Illan Meslier up to a three-year deal.

The Sun has also cited interest in Romero from Leeds, suggesting Marcelo Bielsa’s side has made signing a new stopper a priority ahead of their first Premier League season in 16 years.

The Argentina international has been at Old Trafford since 2015 and has made 59 competitive appearances for the club, as well as a staggering 96 caps for his country.

However, with the possibility that Dean Henderson could return from his loan at Sheffield United, the South American could find his opportunities even scarcer at Manchester United next term.

Mourinho led the Old Trafford side to Europa League glory in 2017 and, ahead of the final against Ajax, confirmed that Romero would start in goal.

“They are two fantastic goalkeepers (De Gea and Romero). You are speaking about Argentina’s national goalkeeper,” Mourinho told The Sun in the pre-match presser.

Romero is a goalkeeper of the highest calibre, one who should surely be getting regular first-team football instead of having to sit on the bench during the majority of matchdays.

He may prove a difficult target to obtain, given the Red Devils aren’t going to let him go easily, not to mention his current £70,000-a-week wages (Spotrac) may prove a bit steep for a newly-promoted side.

However, if Romero’s head is turned with the prospect of first-team Premier League football, not to mention playing under the legendary Bielsa and for some incredibly passionate fans, then perhaps something could be worked out between all parties.
