With Leeds United back in the Premier League after 16 long years out, attention has now turned to bolstering the Whites ranks to ensure Marcelo Bielsa’s charges can hit the ground running in the top flight.

According to an ESPN report from late July, Leeds could be interested in bringing Argentina international Sergio Romero to Elland Road, despite having not long signed Illan Meslier up to a three-year deal.

The Sun also cited interest in Romero from the Yorkshire side late last month, suggesting Bielsa has made signing a new keeper a priority ahead of the 2020-21 campaign.

The 33-year-old has been at Manchester United since 2015 and has made 61 competitive appearances for the club, as well as a staggering 96 caps for his country.

However, Romero may now find his role under threat, given Dean Henderson has just penned a new six-year contract with the Red Devils.

According to Sky Sports, the 23-year-old will earn up to £120,000-a-week, making him one of the best-paid goalkeepers in world football.

Not only that, but Henderson will directly compete with David de Gea for the number one jersey, added the report.

This would push Romero down into third choice, and surely a player of his experience and calibre will want to be at least in with a shout of first-team football?

Admittely, he may prove a difficult target to obtain for Leeds, given his current £70,000-a-week wages (Spotrac) may be a bit steep for a newly-promoted side to put towards a keeper.

However, with Henderson penning a lucrative long-term deal and De Gea still first-choice as things stands, could that be the straw that breaks the camel’s back for Romero?

With the prospect of first-team Premier League football at Leeds, not to mention playing under the legendary Bielsa and for some incredibly passionate fans, then perhaps something could be worked out between all parties.
