Leeds' hopes of winning January transfer chase for Ibai Gomez look increasingly slim
Leeds United are still in the hunt to seal the signature of Alaves midfielder Ibai Gomes during the January transfer window, according to AS, via Sport Witness.
The report claims that Gomez’s dwindling contract situation means he could be available for around 4m euros (£3.6m) next month, otherwise the La Liga club face losing him for nothing in the summer.
Athletic Bilbao and Leicester are named as two sides in the race to sign the winger, meaning that Marcelo Bielsa would need to beat off stiff competition if he was to get his man.
Ultimately, it seems the calibre of the clubs in the chase will just prove too much for Leeds to match and they don’t want to spend too much time barking up the wrong tree in a January window that could shape their promotion bid.
A new goalkeeper and some defensive reinforcements should be at the top of Bielsa’s wishlist if he wants to give his Leeds squad the extra edge to go on and clamber out of the second tier.
Gomez’ contract situation makes him a bargain but it would be a huge shock if the offer from Elland Road could make top flight proposals from both England and Spain.
