Leeds have got to rival Celtic for Italian free agent

Celtic are reportedly looking to sign free agent Andrea Bertolacci this summer as Neil Lennon looks to add European quality to his side – but should Leeds United consider rivalling the Scottish champions?

Italian outlet Calcio Buzz have claimed the 28-year-old is close to a move to Celtic. The five-time Italy international is currently available on a free transfer, after his Milan contract expired at the end of last season.

Indeed, he only managed four appearances for Milan last season, all coming in the Europa League. Celtic are keen to land the midfielder, after missing out on Motherwell sensation David Turnbull.

But since the interest was claimed last week, nothing has been made of Celtic’s reported interest in the free agent and Leeds United have got to swoop in and land the Italian who has since been linked with Italian side SPAL.

Leeds have options in the middle of the park. But Pablo Hernandez is best on the right flank and Matuesz Klich is said to be interesting Burnley. Even if Leeds keep their central midfielders, depth is crucial.

Leeds have been linked with a number of high-profile European midfielders this summer, mainly due to the presence of manager Marcelo Bielsa. Boca Juniors star Nahitan Nandez and Ander Iturraspe are just two examples.

But with the presence of Bielsa, Leeds certainly have the calibre to lure a player who has played more than 50 times for Milan during the last few seasons – and should consider a move to push Celtic aside and land Bertolacci.
