Aston Villa are reportedly interested in signing Chelsea midfielder Ruben Loftus-Cheek this summer with the player targeted for a potential loan move – but if Chelsea are willing to let him go, surely Leeds United have got to be interested too?
Loftus-Cheek, 24, is still on the recovery from a long-term knee injury but has played this season – starting against Brighton and lasting an hour in a 3-1 win. But with Hakim Ziyech set to return, Loftus-Cheek may struggle to get game time.
Indeed, the 10-time England international has the likes of Mateo Kovacic, Mason Mount, N’Golo Kante, Ross Barkley and Jorginho as rivals when it comes to gaining a place in the Chelsea line-up. He has a £120k-a-week (Goal) contract until 2024.
But with the combination of enormous competition and the need for game time to recover from injury, Chelsea could allow Loftus-Cheek to go on loan. The Daily Mail claim Villa are exploring a potential loan move for Loftus-Cheek.
Leeds, meanwhile, are set to add Diego Llorente at centre-back, leaving them with just the need to bring in a permanent partner for Mateusz Klich in central midfield – one that can create goals and score them, too.
Rodrigo De Paul – Udinese’s Argentina international – has been strongly linked with Leeds, as has Atalanta’s £20million-rated Ukraine international Ruslan Malinovskyi, as per the Telegraph. Bayern’s Michael Cuisance is the latest to be linked.
So, a goalscoring midfielder is required, but why not save some money and bring in a player on loan – especially one who has Premier League experience? Loftus-Cheek has had a hand in 17 goals during 78 Premier League games, for Chelsea and Palace.
Elbowing Villa aside and luring him to Elland Road on loan this summer would see Leeds finally secure the last missing piece in their jigsaw, and hand the Whites the perfect Bielsa-style player.
