Ben White has told The Athletic just what Leeds United manager Marcelo Bielsa is like behind the scenes when it comes to training sessions – and the Brighton defender has delivered a response that Leeds supporters will love.
White, 23, joined Leeds on loan in the summer of 2019 as an unknown. He replaced Pontus Jansson but the left club after playing every single one of the club’s 49 league and cup matches during the season in which Leeds gained promotion.
However, despite multiple bids in the summer from Leeds, White returned to Brighton and signed a new deal. He even played against Leeds last weekend, in a match that saw the Whites suffer a 1-0 home defeat to Graham Potter’s Brighton.
White gave an interview to The Athletic following the game this week and spilt the beans on just what Bielsa is like behind the scenes – and claims the former Argentina manager has standards in training as if the World Cup final was tomorrow.
“I progressed massively under him. He gave me the opportunity to perform on a big stage,” White said. “He’s very passionate, wants the best every day. He wants you to train like it’s the final of the World Cup. Every day, the standards are so high.”

TBR’s view – Bielsa insight shows just why Leeds players have improved
Those high standards and demands on the Leeds players from Bielsa is proof that the Argentine manager is the reason why the likes of the Championship-standard players of the Leeds squad have improved, so much so that they are now top-tier players.
When Bielsa took over, Luke Ayling, Liam Cooper, Stuart Dallas, Patrick Bamford and others were regarded as good Championship players. Not the best, but good. Under Bielsa, they are now good Premier League players. That is down to him.
