Leeds fans want Tottenham player signed, after it is confirmed he will leave on a free transfer this summer
Leeds are expected to bring in a number of new players as they look to continue their growth, and solidify their Premier League status. A potential incoming signing could be that of a new goalkeeper, with Kiko Casilla’s future in doubt. Some Leeds fans have identified the ideal replacement.
Casilla, 33, is said to be one of the Yorkshire club’s biggest earners – but after falling behind Illan Meslier, he is currently second choice. That has seen the three-time Champions League winner play just three Premier League matches, keeping one clean sheet in a 2-0 win over Southampton.
If a buyer comes in for the Spain international, then Casilla is likely to be sold by Marcelo Bielsa’s side. A likely occurrence, it would see Leeds need a back-up goalkeeper along with a left-back, holding midfielder and an attacking midfielder. But Leeds will want Meslier to remain first choice.
Keeping the Frenchman as the number one and allowing him to grow is crucial. The more he plays, the better he gets. So, Leeds need to sign a goalkeeper that is happy to play second fiddle at Elland Road and the perfect opportunity may have just presented itself – on a free transfer.
Ideal Leeds man released by Tottenham – Paulo Gazzaniga
Gazzaniga is a top, top goalkeeper. Not only has he impressed when given the chance at Tottenham, he has even earned an Argentina cap. His best season at Spurs came during the campaign in which Mauricio Pochettino departed – playing 25 of his 37 Spurs matches with Hugo Lloris injured.
He broke past Michel Vorm to be second choice. Last summer, he decided not to sit on the bench behind Joe Hart – but instead to go on loan to Elche. Back at Spurs, he and ex-Leeds academy product Danny Rose will be released. It was confirmed by Spurs in a statement last week.
So, available on a free, Gazzaniga would surely be happy to come to Leeds and act as Meslier’s cover. Right now at Tottenham, he is third choice behind Lloris and Hart. Yes, he might start at some other Premier League clubs but the difference could be that Marcelo Bielsa is manager.
Leeds will surely prove tempting for Tottenham’s Gazzaniga
A legend of football in Argentina, Gazzaniga will know what Bielsa is all about. Having followed Pochettino to Southampton and then Spurs, the now-PSG manager’s belief that Bielsa is the best will have convinced Gazzaniga too. The chance to work under Bielsa will be very tempting.
For Leeds, Gazzaniga is tempting, too. As goalkeepers go, Gazzaniga is still young at 29 and is more than adept at playing out from the back – fitting in the Leeds style. On a free transfer, Gazzaniga gives Leeds the option of saving money to spend elsehwhere, but still offering top-tier quality.
Leeds fans are seemingly in agreement. Following the announcement that Gazzaniga will be released this summer, on June 30, Leeds supporters have responded. They think he would be perfect.
