West Bromwich Albion playmaker Matheus Pereira is giving Baggies fans hope. The little Brazilian scored again on Monday night as West Brom earned a brilliant 3-0 win over Southampton – and his efforts have caught the eye of Leeds United fans.
Pereira, 24, scored his eighth goal of the Premier League season – going level with the top-scoring Brazilians in the Premier League, alongside Manchester City’s Gabriel Jesus. The victory has seen the Baggies win back-to-back games.
Now with 27 Premier League appearances to his name, Pereira has eight goals and five assists to his name – in a side that have sat in the relegation zone for the entirety of the Premier League campaign. His penalty on Monday got the ball rolling.
It comes on the back of a stunning performance against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, in which he scored twice and created two more in a shocking 5-2 win over Thomas Tuchel’s side. The Baggies still have it all to do in their remaining seven games.
The Midlands side are showing signs of life but it might have come too late, with eight points separating themselves from 17th-placed Newcastle United. Two away games face West Brom next. travelling to Leicester City and then to Aston Villa.
So, there is a chance of survival, but relegation still looks likely. If they do go down, there is a huge chance that a number of players will depart including Brazilian Pereira. UOL Esporte claim West Brom will accept offers of £17million if they go down.
Leeds, meanwhile, have shown their fellow promoted sides how it should be done. With Fulham and West Brom sitting in the bottom three, Leeds have defied pre-season expectations to sit in a lofty tenth place and with 45 points from 31 games.
They will be expected to be challenging for the top half this season and next, with another summer of transfer activity expected. The Whites will look at signing a left-back, cover for Kalvin Phillips and potentially another striker.
But another priority will be an attacking midfielder. They tried desperately to sign one last summer in the form of Rodrigo De Paul and Michael Cuisance, but both moves fell through – leaving Tyler Roberts and Rodrigo to play there.
Pereira, then, might be an option. The Brazilian offers the kind of creativity and versatility that Bielsa likes – with Pereira more than capable of playing out wide. He would find Raphinha and Helder Costa as Portuguese-speaking companions in the squad.
Still young, showing he can hack it in the Premier League and with plenty of versatility – Pereira is a bargain at £17million. Surely, Leeds are not going to bring in a player of his quality for cheaper than the same figure they paid to sign Raphinha?
Leeds fans have reacted on Twitter to the performance of Pereira on Monday night and many Leeds fans are desperate to see the Brazilian considered by the likes of Victor Orta and the Leeds hierarchy this summer, if West Brom do go down.

Wouldn’t mind us going after Mateus Pereira when WBA go down!
El Loco would have him playing like Ronaldinho #lufc

definitely has the ability, it would be making him buy into the vision and getting him in the right mentality, if we did though he’d be a brilliant player for us

Cheap at that price.

Would be rude not to at that price tbh – would fit criteria of mould of player as well
