Leeds United’s Under-23 side suffered a 2-0 defeat to Crystal Palace in Premier League 2 on Monday afternoon, their first defeat in 10 league games – and supporters have questioned a decision made by manager Mark Jackson in the second half.
Mark Jackson’s side took to the field having previously won nine consecutive Premier League 2 matches, sitting at the top of the table. However, an early red card saw Leeds stutter, in a match which saw Gaetano Berardi finally return from a knee injury.
Netherlands youth international Summerville was shown a yellow card initially for dissent after conceding a free-kick – and then, with a Palace player advancing forward, he brought him down. It saw him receive a red card – after picking up two yellow cards.
The red card forced Jackson to make changes to his side. However, clearly the pre-match instructions were to remove Berardi as he continues his comeback – and potentially Joe Gelhardt too, despite the red card and the need for attacking players.
Some Leeds fans reacted to attacker Gelhardt’s removal, questioning why the £16,500-a-week (Spotrac) striker was removed even if there was an agreement before the match – given the second string side had gone down to 10 men during the first half.
