Leeds fans stunned by one player’s second-half moment in win over Sunderland U23’s

Leeds United’s Under-23 side produced a stunning rearguard display to earn a sixth consecutive Premier League 2 win over Sunderland’s second string at Thorp Arch – and fans have raved about Jamie Shackleton’s brilliant moment in the second half.

The Whites came into the match at the top of Premier League 2 Division 2, and had the chance to stretch that lead to 10 points with a win against Sunderland – a side they beat 3-1 away from home earlier this season, thanks to a Sam Greenwood hat-trick.

Things got off to a great start. Joe Gelhardt was superb all afternoon and he won the penalty for Leeds in which Tyler Roberts scored – sending the goalkeeper the wrong way. Gelhardt was gracious in allowing Roberts to take the penalty.

Having brought Shackleton, Ian Poveda and Greenwood on all after 45 minutes, Leeds were forced down to 10 man after Poveda picked up a worrying looking ankle injury. But that did not deter the Whites, who doubled their lead.

That was largely down the blistering speed of Shackleton. His electric pace down the right flank saw him reach the byline and pull back for Niall Huggins, who finished emphatically into the corner to double his side’s lead. Mark Jackson was impressed.

Leeds fans were also full of praise for Shackleton, amazed by the midfielder’s speed in their reaction on social media. One fan claimed he is quicker than “prime Usain Bolt”.
