Romaine Sawyers has posted on Twitter after scoring a bizarre own goal during West Bromwich Albion’s 5-0 defeat to Leeds United on Tuesday evening – and Leeds fans have sent messages to the Baggies midfielder.

Sawyers, 29, started his eighth consecutive Premier League game in the middle of the park as West Brom faced a confident Leeds team who came into the match having beaten Burnley. West Brom had drawn 1-1 with Liverpool.

But Sawyers own goal was the start of the end. Without looking, the midfielder looked to pass back to goalkeeper Sam Johnstone who had vacated his six-yard box to give Sawyers an angle. The ball trickled into the net.

Leeds went on to win 5-0, with the scoreline reading 4-0 at half-time. Gjanni Alioski, Jack Harrison, Rodrigo Moreno and Raphinha all got their names on the score sheet and Sawyers apologised to Baggies fans on Twitter.

The win sees Leeds climb to a very impressive 11th place, with 23 points from their first 16 games. They are well on course to securing Premier League safety, though they do take on Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday.

Leeds fans reacted to Sawyers post after his own goal against them on Tuesday night, and many have backed the £3million (Express & Star) signing to recover from his mistake against Marcelo Bielsa’s side.
