Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has confirmed on Twitter that Atalanta captain Papu Gomez will look to leave the Champions League side in January after a fight with his manager – and Leeds fans are desperate for their club to get him.
Gomez, 32, has emerged as a club legend of Atalanta over the past few seasons. Clocking up more than 250 appearances for the club since joining in 2014, has had a hand in 130 goals – scoring 59 and creating 71 more.
He has become a legend at Atalanta after helping his side turn themselves from mid-table Italian side to Champions League under Gian Piero Gasperini. He has even earned five Argentina caps in that time, but things have turned sour.
Despite Atalanta qualifying for the knockout stages of the competition, again, Gomez and Gasperini fell out at half-time during a 1-1 draw with Danish club FC Midtjylland. Gomez was hooked at the break and Atalanta failed to win.
Gomez was then left on the substitutes bench against Fiorentina on the weekend – a match which Atalanta won 3-0. He has entered the final two years of his contract at Atalanta – and Romano has now issued an update, stating he wants a January exit.
Losing Gomez will be a huge blow for Atalanta – especially given last season’s form that saw the pocket-sized dynamo have a hand in 23 goals during 36 league games, 16 of which were assists. Leeds, meanwhile, are lacking in magic.
They need a player that can open the door, one that can finally answer Marcelo Bielsa’s search for an attacking midfielder in behind the striker – whether that striker be Rodrigo or Patrick Bamford.
Just one win in six games has seen Bielsa and Leeds edge towards the bottom of the table – with the Whites now on just 14 points from 12 league games. Weaknesses against counter-attacking teams and set-pieces have been particularly to blame.
But a lack of creativity was concering against West Ham. The Whites failed to really create more than half chances other than the penalty in which Mateusz Klich scored. So, Leeds need a partner for Klich in attacking midfield.

Why not Gomez? Argentine, like Bielsa – Gomez has shown in recent seasons that age is just a number. His passion matches that of El Loco, and is hardly going to cost an extortionate amount given his age, desire to leave and contract status.
Proven in the Champions League and Serie A season upon season, Gomez is a proper talent. Flair, creation, goals, aggression – he certainly embodies that of the typical pint-sized Argentine attacker.
His wages could be an issue, but that did not stop owner Andrea Radrizzani paying big for the likes of Rodrigo and Diego Llorente in the summer. Certainly, Leeds fans think Gomez would be a great signing for Bielsa’s faltering team.
Many Whites supporters reacted to transfer expert Romano’s Tweet, urging their side to make a move for no.10 Gomez in the upcoming window. Whether Leeds are active in said window remains to be seen, given their summer outlay.
