Leeds fans react to Gaetano Berardi’s performance against Sheffield Wednesday

Leeds United took a huge step towards automatic promotion to the Premier League with a crucial 1-0 win over Sheffield Wednesday at Elland Road (BBC Sport).

The second-placed Whites are now three points ahead of Sheffield United in the Championship table, after the Blades could only draw 1-1 with Milwall.

Jack Harrison bagged the winner for Marcelo Bielsa’s side, who dominated Wednesday during Saturday tea-time despite only a narrow margin of victory.

Before kick-off Leeds captain Liam Cooper pulled up with a muscle injury, forcing Bielsa into a last-minute change that saw Gaetano Berardi step in at centre-back.

It was the Swiss defender’s first start since the 2-0 victory over Ipswich Town back in October having been suffering from a hamstring injury, but there were only minimal signs of rust.

Despite a shaky start, Berardi did a great job of nullifying the threat of Steven Fletcher overall. He was required to be steady in the wake of Leeds losing their captain, and he was just that in the end.
