Leeds fans react on Twitter to Illan Meslier’s display in Charlton win

A number of Leeds United supporters took to Twitter to comment on Illan Meslier’s display as the Whites rounded off their title-winning campaign with an emphatic 4-0 win over Charlton Athletic at Elland Road on Wednesday.

Marcelo Bielsa’s side produced their sixth win on the bounce to move 10 points clear at the top of the table on the night Liam Cooper was finally able to get his hands on the Championship trophy.

It was tense for some time before Leeds saw off the challenges for West Brom and Brentford. Nevertheless, it is surely fair to say that the supporters would be forgiven for wondering whether they had seen enough of Meslier in the games leading up to the Charlton clash.

The Frenchman’s record since coming into the team has been hugely impressive. He had kept six clean sheets in his nine league appearances before the final day.

His distribution has generally been superb. And he has arguably stood up to every test he has had to face. He has won a lot of plaudits for the way that he has made good decisions when coming off his line, and has often alleviated pressure from crosses and corners by punching clear.

But the Charlton clash also provided Meslier an opportunity to finally show how good he can be when tasked with stopping shots also.

The 20-year-old made two fantastic saves to preserve his latest clean sheet. One in particular evoked memories of Gordon Banks as he shifted across his line and tipped the ball around the post from a header that looked destined to go in for the Addicks.

The Daily Mirror reported in March that Leeds were planning to make Meslier’s loan move permanent. And Foot Mercato reported after promotion was secured that the youngster was set to pen a three-year deal in the coming days.

And plenty of supporters are delighted that the signs point towards Meslier signing permanently. Many believe that he has shown that he is the best goalkeeper in Bielsa’s squad, and they are extremely excited about his potential.
