Leeds fans react on Twitter as Jamie Shackleton scores for U23s

A number of Leeds United fans have taken to Twitter to express their excitement ahead of Jamie Shackleton’s return to the first-team after the midfielder scored a superb goal for the under-23s on Monday.

Shackleton has not featured for Marcelo Bielsa’s side since November. His return has been on the cards for some time however, and he was included on the bench for Saturday’s clash with Sheffield Wednesday.

The 20-year-old did not get on at Elland Road. But he appears to have taken another step towards getting back in the team by playing 45 minutes for the under-23s as they took on Crewe.

It was a tough game for Carlos Corberan’s men. Conditions were horrific at times, and the pitch seemed to resemble a Sunday league surface by the end of the contest.

But the first piece of real quality during the game – which Leeds would win 2-1 – came from Shackleton. The midfielder initially won an aerial duel in the middle of the park to give Ryan Edmondson the chance to run at the defence.

The striker would then give the ball back to Shackleton on the edge of the box. The youngster took one touch before finding the top corner.

The finish itself was arguably somewhat reminiscent of Pablo Hernandez’s stunning goal against West Brom last season. And it appears that plenty of Leeds fans want Shackleton playing alongside Hernandez  on Saturday when the first-team face Queens Park Rangers.

Shackleton has impressed whenever he has played for the senior side. And some of the supporters are hoping that he gets another opportunity this weekend. There was also praise for Edmondson for his excellent assist.

Here is how some of the Leeds fans reacted to Shackleton’s goal…
