Leeds fans react as Tyler Roberts makes claim about upcoming opponents
Tyler Roberts has told the Yorkshire Evening Post that he feels Leeds United are still the best side in the Championship and are confident of picking up wins against Nottingham Forest and Brentford – but Leeds fans have reacted in a despondant manner.
Saturday afternoon’s 1-0 defeat to Wigan Athletic at Elland Road saw Leeds’ dismal run of form stretch to just two league wins in nine outings. It has seen the Whites go from more than 10 points clear of third, to just three.
The Whites take on three top-six teams in their next three matches. Very difficult trips to Nottingham Forest and Brentford are next, before Marcelo Bielsa’s men face Bristol City at Elland Road – all in the space of seven days.
It could be a brief period that makes or breaks their promotion campaign. Forest have won just two of their last six, though, while Brentford have just one win in four. Asked about the upcoming matches, Roberts was in confident mood.
“All of the boys know we’re the best team in the Championship, we deserve to go up,” Roberts said. We know that we’ve got it in ourselves and we believe we can get it over the finish line.
“There’s still a long way to go, everyone knows that. After [Forest and Brentford] there’ll be 16 games left. Anything can happen. They’re two great games to go and battle against the teams who are fighting with us. It’ll show what we’re about.”
Roberts, 21, made just his second Championship appearance on Saturday since November – after another campaign filled with injury problems. In two years at Elland Road since his £4million (Mail) move, Roberts has only managed 42 appearances.
But the former West Brom star seems ready to go again, but his confident comments have not gone down well with the Leeds support. One fan responded to his comments, describing them as “empty words”.
I’d love to see this rather than continually hearing it.
