Leeds fans react as Southampton reportedly eye Kalvin Phillips

Leeds United star Kalvin Phillips is reportedly a target for Premier League side Southampton ahead of the summer window – and some Leeds fans are concerned that the midfielder could leave.

The Sun’s transfer expert Alan Nixon claimed in Sunday’s paper edition of The Sun (Page 61) that Southampton were preparing an offer for the holding midfielder, who is in the form of his life under Marcelo Bielsa.

The 23-year-old has only missed three league games all season due to a red card suspension. He has been converted from an attacking midfielder into a midfield anchor, and has even played at centre-back this season.

It is believed that if Leeds gain promotion to the Premier League, then a deal is off the table for the Thorp Arch academy product. If they remain in the Championship, then a £20million price tag will be dropped on Phillips’ head.

Phillips was one of two Leeds players included in the Championship Team of the Season, along with defender and captain Liam Cooper. The duo have been pivotal to Leeds closing in on the Premier League.

Though it looks unlikely that Southampton are to sign Phillips, given that Leeds sit second in the Championship with four league games left – the Saints’ interest shows how far the midfielder has come this season.

Leeds fans reacted on Twitter to the news that Southampton wanted to sign Phillips in the summer, and some are concerned that he could depart Elland Road. Others, meanwhile, laughed off Southampton’s reported interest.
