Leeds United’s Under-23 side suffered a 2-1 home defeat to Crewe Alexandra on Monday afternoon despite fielding a number of first-team faces – but it was captain Robbie Gotts that caught the eye of Leeds fans on Twitter.
Carlos Corberan started a side that included summer signing Illan Meslier, Luke Ayling, Barry Douglas, Leif Davis, Jack Clarke, Mateusz Bogusz and Alfie McCalmont. Gotts, Olly Casey, Liam McCarron and Ryan Edmondson also got the nod.
Douglas and Ayling were both replaced on 36 minutes ahead of Tuesday night’s clash against West Bromwich Albion in the Championship, while Clarke was given the first half before Kun Temenuzhkov replaced the Tottenham loanee.
Crewe took the lead through Oliver Finney who smashed the ball into the top corner, before he doubled his tally from the penalty spot after a foul in the penalty area. Lorient loanee Meslier was sent the wrong way by Finney.
But Leeds were much better in the second half as they looked to avoid their first defeat since December at home, and Gotts scored in the 71st minute – linking well with Edmondson before sliding in to score and taking a knock in the process.
Despite the loss, Leeds fans were delighted with the efforts of the 19-year-old, who played in central midfield but has been seen at right-back too, just like Jamie Shackleton. Many reacted on Twitter to Gotts’ performance.
