Leeds fans react as Mateusz Bogusz impresses in Carabao Cup clash against Hull

Leeds United suffered a penalty shootout defeat to League One Hull City in the second round of the Carabao Cup following Gjanni Alioski’s equaliser in injury time – but fans were impressed with 19-year-old Mateusz Bogusz.

Following Saturday evening’s encouraging 4-3 defeat to Premier League champions Liverpool, Bielsa opted to make an enormous 11 changes to his starting XI. He combined youth with starts for fringe players, and Rodrigo.

It was a shaky start to the match as an inexperienced defence of Leif Davis and Charlie Cresswell gave former Leeds winger Wilks far too much space on the edge of the area. His effort deflected past Kiko Casilla into the net.

The score line remained the same until injury time, when Hull failed to clear a corner and a cross from Barry Douglas eventually fell to Macedonian ace Alioski. He lashed home a left-footed effort into the top corner from eight yards.

The match went to penalties and with the scoreline level at 8-8, it was Jamie Shackleton that saw his spot-kick saved – allowing Hull’s Alfie Jones to find the back of the net and take Hull into the next round of the Cup.

Bogusz impressed in midfield in what was the Poland Under-21 international’s third senior Leeds appearance. He lasted 78 minutes before Bielsa decided to substitute him for Robbie Gotts.

Leeds supporters responded on Twitter to Bogusz’s display and despite the disappointing display from Bielsa’s side which saw them eventually lose on penalties – fans were impressed with Bogusz’s efforts.
