Leeds United have confirmed on their official website that Luke Ayling has agreed a four-year deal at Elland Road, extending his previous deal by a further two years to keep him in Yorkshire until the summer of 2023.
Ayling, 28, has been in excellent form for Leeds since joining the club from Bristol City in the summer of 2016. He has become a leader at Elland Road, clocking up 116 appearances in all competitions for the Whites.
The ex-Arsenal star is considered one of the best right-sided defenders in the Championship, as he continues to shine under Marcelo Bielsa. Ayling’s new deal is just one of a number of senior players to have recently put pen to paper of late.
Kalvin Phillips ended plenty of speculation over a move to Aston Villa, while captain Liam Cooper and Stuart Dallas also agreed new deals. Matuesz Klich is also expected to put pen to paper. Leeds confirmed Ayling’s new deal on Twitter.
Ayling is yet to feature for the Whites this season but is expected to return to action sooner rather than later. Indeed, the defender played 35 minutes of an Under-23 defeat to Crewe Alexandra on Monday afternoon.
Leeds fans reacted to the news that Ayling had put pen to paper on Twitter, and the majority of supporters are delighted that ‘Bill” has agreed a new deal with the club – as the Leeds board learn from their mistakes regarding Kemar Roofe.
Some others, though, think that the new deal for Ayling might be too long – especially for a player that has failed to get Leeds into the Premier League, as of yet.
