Keith Stroud has been appointed as the man in the middle as Leeds United travel to newly-promoted League Two side Salford City in the first round of the Carabao Cup – and Leeds fans are not best pleased on Twitter.

It promises to be an exciting match. Marcelo Bielsa’s side are constantly in the media given the calibre and pedigree of the Leeds United manager, twinned with the enormity of the club and its diehard fanbase.

A promotion push, spygate and plenty more kept the world watching Leeds last season. Now, they take on one of the other most popular clubs in the Football League – Salford, who are owned by Manchester United’s class of ’92.

Indeed, Paul Scholes, Gary Neville, Phil Neville, Nicky Butt, Ryan Giggs and David Beckham all own 10% each, while major shareholder Peter Lim currently boasts 40%. It is arguably Salford’s biggest game in the history of their club.

Referee Stroud, 50, who is hugely experienced in the Championship and indeed in the Premier League, last refereed Leeds as the Whites suffered a 2-0 defeat to Brentford – ending the club’s chances of automatic promotion.

Pablo Hernandez’s tears were down to a huge decision Stroud made in the first half, with the score at 0-0. Patrick Bamford looked as though he had been fouled in the Brentford penalty area, but Stroud played on.

Replays showed that there was indeed contact from Brentford defender Julian Jeanvier. Leeds fans have not forgotten, and have reacted on Twitter to the news that Stroud will be officiating, as per the EFL’s official site – much to their despair.
