Leeds fans react as Kalvin Phillips’ agent gives an update on contract talks

The agent of Kalvin Phillips has given a hugely encouraging update when asked talks over the midfielder’s current contract situation – and Leeds United supporters have reacted on Twitter to the comments.

Phillips, 23, has become an integral member of Marcelo Bielsa’s starting XI since the Argentine manager took over and moulded the attacking midfielder into a more defensive one – that can also play at centre-back.

But Leeds were faced with the possibility of losing one of their best players in Phillips during the summer. Newly-promoted Aston Villa were interested, with the Yorkshire Evening Post claiming Leeds rejected an offer worth around £20million.

Leeds are looking to tie down the future of Phillips by securing his future with a new deal. His current contract ends in the summer of 2021, but Phillips’ agent Kevin Sharp stated that talks are ongoing – and things look “very promising”.

“It’s clear for all to see that the owner, Victor Orta and the manager all see Kalvin as a major player in the squad,” Sharp said. “No matter how important he is, they want to get the best deal possible and I want to get him the best deal possible.

“Kalvin is really happy to stay and wants to sign a new deal. We had a very amicable meeting, we all came out very positive. It looks very promising, that’s as much as I can say.”

Phillips will be a valuable member of the Leeds side for the rest of the campaign, and if the Whites do gain promotion to the Premier League – it is inevitable that Phillips will be one of the players in the Leeds side that continues to be first choice.

Leeds fans have reacted to Sharp’s comments. Many are delighted to hear that Phillips and Leeds could announce a new deal at Elland Road, but some are worried a clause could be included allowing Phillips to leave – if promotion is not secured this season.
