Leeds fans react as Harry Winks eyes Tottenham loan exit
A number of Leeds United fans have taken to Twitter to comment on reports this week claiming that Harry Winks is now keen to leave Tottenham Hotspur on loan in January.
What’s the story?
Winks is eyeing a temporary move away from Spurs after appearing in only two of their Premier League games so far this term, according to The Times.
The report has noted that he was wanted by Everton, Aston Villa and Brighton in the summer. It is not clear whether any of the trio plan to reignite their interest.
But The Times does suggest that he would be open to moving abroad in the winter as he looks to secure more regular game-time.
The reports have certainly prompted a lot of discussion amongst Leeds United fans on Twitter.
It is well-known that Marcelo Bielsa would rather do no business during the January transfer window.
During his tenure, Leeds have only brought in first-team signings in the winter when they have had to replace a loanee who has left the club.
Both Kiko Casilla and Jean-Kevin Augustin arrived in the wake of players leaving Elland Road and returning to their parent club prematurely.
And their respective spells perhaps vindicate Bielsa’s stance on signing players midway through the season.
But there is a void in the Leeds squad right now. It does appear that they have suffered after not signing a central midfielder for the first-team in the summer.
It must be noted that Winks has reportedly been on their radar. The Athletic reported in August that Leeds rejected the chance to sign the Spurs man on loan.
That would suggest that any sort of move in January is highly unlikely. Winks would also be aware that he would probably not have an immediate place in the team if he moved to Elland Road, such is the way Bielsa handles new recruits.
But there are some fans on social media who believe that he would be a decent addition now that he wants to leave on loan in January.
He has previously shown a lot of potential – even if he has not kicked on. And some think that he could develop if he got to work with Bielsa.
‘I’d take him’: Leeds fans react as Harry Winks eyes leaving Tottenham on loan
He has previously shone in big Champions League games. And he can play as a defensive midfielder or in a role slightly further forward.
Mauricio Pochettino previously compared Winks with Xavi and Andres Iniesta. And while he currently looks a very long way off justifying those comparisons, that does highlight what a player he could be if his full potential is unlocked.
You can understand why more Leeds fans hit out at the notion that they should target Winks.
But there are plenty who feel that he could be a good signing for the second-half of the campaign due to their midfield issues – should Bielsa change his stance on him in the coming months.
With that in mind, here is what some of the Leeds fans were saying about Winks…

I think we should get involved in this a good little player and would thrive under Bielsa https://t.co/A0TMVyHdUw

I like Winks but I remember in the summer the Spurs fans couldn’t wait to get shut of him and they’ve watched him, we haven’t. I’d rather see us drip feed one of our own kids into the team and see how they perform.

Almost commented on the original post. The midfield backup is desperately needed. Won’t be much on the market in January.
