Derby manager Frank Lampard got his side within 90 minutes of promotion back to the Premier League in his first season in management but fell to a 2-1 defeat against Aston Villa at the final hurdle at Wembley yesterday.
There are plenty of positives to take from the season, but it’s a crushing blow to come so close and not get back into the big time.
Lampard was keen to accentuate the good work his young side did this season, and as per Derby’s official Twitter account, namechecked the victory at Leeds in the semi-final second leg as an example of the progress made under him.
But Leeds fans were never going to let Derby’s defeat pass without incident, given the very modern acrimony between the sides in the wake of this season’s Spygate scandal and the Rams subsequently knocking them out of play-off contention.
They piled straight in on Lampard for mentioning them in his post-match interview, taking to Twitter to mock the former Chelsea man’s comments and tell him they’ll see him next season.
This rivalry looks set to run and run with both clubs back in the same division next season and we’ve put together the latest online installment…
Hahahahahahahahahahahahahaha cheated financial fair play, finished in same position as last season, bottled play-offs for the fourth time in six years STOP CRYING FRANK LAMPARD!!!! #ALAW #MOT #stopcryingfranklampard

Progress? You bounced around the Leeds away dressing room like you'd won the Champions League then bottled it again. Looking forward to another six points next season. By the way: Have you got another stadium to sell?
