Leeds fans react as Atalanta set to complete £12m deal
Fabrizio Romano says Atalanta are set to complete a £12million move to sign AZ Alkmaar skipper Teun Koopmeiners – and Leeds fans are frustrated.
Leeds are in need of a midfielder and tried to get Conor Gallagher on loan from Chelsea. Huddersfield’s Lewis O’Brien has also been strongly linked.
A midfielder looks to go amiss, then, for Leeds. They have been keen in the past for Alkmaar and Netherlands ace Koopmeiners, back in 2020.
But Leeds have clearly missed the boat. Following AZ losing to Celtic in Europa League qualifying, Atalanta are close to signing him for £12million.
Koopmeiners to Atalanta: Leeds fans left frustrated by bargain price
What will annoy Leeds fans is that £12million is a small-ish sum for the club these days. Rodrigo cost more than double that last summer.
For a player that they need, it would have been a brilliant deal. Koopmeiners has already played 154 times for AZ, and is the club’s captain.
In that time, he has produced 60 goal involvements. Scoring 43, he has laid on 17 assists. That kind of midfield creativity is what Leeds lack.
Mateusz Klich has been indifferent since promotion, while Stuart Dallas is offering cover on the left. Rodrigo and Tyler Roberts are options in the 10.
But neither have been able to hold down the position – while, Kalvin Phillips lacks cover. Leeds fans have reacted, as Atalanta close in on Koopemeiners.
