Leeds fans react as Aapo Halme endures nightmare debut for Barnsley

Leeds United sold Aapo Halme to Barnsley earlier this summer in what was a somewhat surprising permanent move – and Leeds fans have reacted following his nightmare start to life at Oakwell.

The 21-year-old defender joined Leeds from Finnish side HJK Helsinki in January 2018. Following plenty of time in the club’s reserve side, Halme finally broke into the senior team under Marcelo Bielsa.

Indeed, the 6ft 7in colossus made five appearances during the 2018-19 campaign, coming on as a substitute during a 1-0 win against Sheffield United and even scoring in the 2-1 FA Cup defeat to QPR in January.

This summer, Halme was one of three Leeds players to move to Barnsley on permanent deals. The impressive Mallik Wilks was one, after starring at Doncaster last season, while Clarke Oduor moved on deadline day.

Halme remained on the substitutes bench for Barnsley’s first two league games which included a win over Fulham but a defeat to Sheffield Wednesday. But Halme was given the nod on Tuesday against Carlisle.

But the Tykes surprisingly lost 3-0 to the League Two side at home, with Halme completed at fault for the first goal. He failed to control a pass, allowing Harry McKirdy to score. Leeds fans reacted on Twitter to his mistake.
