Leeds fans rave over youngster Stuart McKinstry in narrow FA Youth Cup loss

Leeds United’s Under-18 side fought bravely but ultimately suffered a 1-0 defeat to Manchester United in the FA Youth Cup at Old Trafford on Wednesday night – and Leeds fans have reacted on Twitter to Stuart McKinstry’s performance.

Henry Kumwenda’s sending off was the turning point as Manchester United dominated the match after the red card in the 64th minute. Before the referee’s controversial decision, it had been a very equal match.

With Jamie Shackleton in the stands watching on, Leeds took the game to United and had chances of their own in the first half. The likes of McKinstry, Niklas Haugland and Jack Jenkins all impressed, while Charlie Cresswell starred at the back.

But on the hour mark, Manchester United broke the deadlock. Dillon Hoogewerf found space in the area to bundle a header beyond Leeds goalkeeper Cooper Skerry, after a pinpoint cross from Reece Devine.

With 10 men, Mark Jackson’s Leeds struggled to get going but many Whites fans were very impressed with summer signing McKinstry from Motherwell – despite Manchester United progressing to the last eight of the competition.

Leeds fans reacted on Twitter to McKinstry’s performance with many of the belief that not only was he the best player in the Leeds side on the night – but the 17-year-old was the “best player on the pitch”.
