Leeds fans put two and two together, hoping club are reportedly in talks to sign Euro 2020 finalist
The YEP claim that just days after signing Junior Firpo, Leeds are in talks to sign a midfielder. Victor Orta is “selling the dream” to this unnamed star – with Marcelo Bielsa keen. Leeds fans have put two and two together amid another report, and claim it could be Euro 2020 finalist Manuel Locatelli.
Firpo, 24, signed a four-year deal earlier this week as Leeds enjoyed a productive few days in the transfer market. Three new faces have now arrived at Elland Road. Firpo the main one, while Under-23 recruits Amari Miller and Sean McGurk have also been announced by the Yorkshire club.
Jack Harrison is now officially a Leeds player, completing a permanent move after three seasons at Elland Road on loan. It leaves Leeds with a pretty well-balanced squad going into the 2021-22 season. But the YEP state that Leeds are not done there, and fans can expect two more big signings.
Indeed, the report claims Leeds are in talks with an unnamed midfielder. It is believed that Orta is doing his best to tempt the midfielder into a move to Elland Road. Bielsa is said to have given his approval over a move for said midfielder. But the identity of this midfield lynchpin remains unknown.
Why Leeds fans think it could be Italy star Manuel Locatelli…
If you had not heard much about 23-year-old Locatelli before the start of the European Championships, then you will have now. The Sassuolo midfielder has featured in four of Italy’s six games on their road to the final. He even netted a brace against Switzerland during a 3-0 win.
Not particularly renowned for his goals, Locatelli is more of a box-to-box midfielder with an incredible engine – and added elegance. He has that dogged workmanlike approach to midfield football, but the kind of top-tier vision, touch, passing that you would expect from an Italy international.
Sassuolo CEO Giovanni Carnevali has been quoted by Goal as saying that Serie A side Sassuolo are in ‘advanced’ talks with an unnamed foreign club. Arsenal are the most prominent when it comes to reports. Gazzetta Dello Sport claimed recently that Juventus had raised their bid to £34million.
Why Locatelli is perfect – but probably too ambitious
Now, there is no reason as to why Leeds might be the unnamed foreign club pursuing a deal for the highly-rated midfielder. It is simply that fans have seen both reports, and suggested it could be Leeds on Twitter. But focusing on whether Locatelli would be a good signing for Leeds – oh yes.
He is the perfect kind of Bielsa player. He has the work rate of Stuart Dallas, but the touch and finesse of Mateusz Klich. The ideal number six, that could also probably cover Kalvin Phillips as a four, or Rodrigo or Tyler Roberts in the 10. Locatelli would be a dream signing for Leeds.
Given the clubs that are keen, though, he is probably out of the Yorkshire side’s reach. Nevertheless, Leeds fans have discussed the reports of an unnamed midfielder and talks – as well as an unnamed club in talks for Locatelli. Many Leeds fans are praying it is Locatelli.
