Leeds fans not happy as Marcelo Bielsa makes claim about promotion

Marcelo Bielsa has claimed in his press conference that winning promotion with Leeds United would not equate to landing the league title with Newell’s Old Boys – and angry Leeds fans have reacted on Twitter.

Bielsa, 63, is set to guide Leeds into the play-offs on Saturday after finishing third in the Championship. They take on Derby County, who finished in sixth place under Frank Lampard.

Leeds have a chance to return to the top flight for the first time since their relegation in 2004, which has now seen Leeds fans starved of Premier League football for 15 years.

Asked what would be his best and favourite achievement, former Argentina manager Bielsa stated winning the title with Newell’s in 1991-92 would be better than winning promotion with Leeds.

“The impact that this has on Newell’s and the fans and the public, I couldn’t compare anything to what I have lived with Newell’s. For us, football is a lot more than what it is for you,” Bielsa said, as quoted by the Evening Post.

“Becuase you keep a level of moderation here that gives the right importance to the results, you put the sports result in the right place but the fans of Newell’s can’t do that.”

Leeds have come close to returning to the Premier League, but lost to Watford in the play-off final 3-0 back in 2006. Tyler Roberts, Gjanni Alioski, Barry Douglas and Patrick Bamford will all miss the first leg.

Leeds fans reacted on Twitter to Bielsa’s comments that a Newell’s league title will mean more than a promotion to the Premier League for the Whites, and many fans are somewhat angry.
