Alfie McCalmont started for Leeds United in a pre-season victory on Wednesday night – and some of the club’s supporters on Twitter were impressed by his performance.

The 19-year-old was involved in a 5-0 win against non-league team York City, as several players impressed in the friendly.

Marcelo Bielsa named a strong starting XI that were 4-0 up at half-time, with Jack Harrison (two), Pablo Hernandez and Kemar Roofe on the scoresheet.

Adam Forshaw added a fifth in the second-half and it was a decent run out for the Yorkshire giants in pre-season.

McCalmont was deployed in the defensive midfield role, which was the position that Kalvin Phillips did extremely well in last season.

The teenager helped screen the back four in the deeper position with some great positioning and he showed some tidy touch on the ball too.

It was his first start in a Leeds shirt and he will hope he can continue to impress after making a positive impact, but it was of course against minnow opposition in pre-season.

A selection of Leeds supporters on social media feel that McCalmont more than held his own in the centre of the park and feel he could have a big role to play.

Bielsa could do with finding a backup option to Phillips, who didn’t have much cover last season.
