Gary Neville claimed while co-commentator during Sky Sports’ coverage of England’s 1-0 defeat to Denmark that Leeds United midfielder Kalvin Phillips will have learnt more with England than he has at Leeds – and Whites fans have reacted angrily.
Phillips, 24, played in all three of England’s three fixtures during the international break – starting in the 3-0 win over Wales and Wednesday night’s 1-0 defeat to Denmark, while also coming on as a substitute against Belgium, which ended in a 2-1 win.
It comes as Phillips’ burgeoning rise continues. Prior to Marcelo Bielsa’s arrival, he was simply a mediocre part of a struggling Leeds side in the Championship. But since Bielsa’s coaching, he has become one of England’s best.
Improved fitness, a change in position, stronger, and technically much more balanced, Phillips has starred for Leeds and fully deserves his place in the England side. But Neville reckons he has learnt more with England recently, than he has at Leeds.

“What a learning curve for Kalvin Phillips. He’s probably learnt more in the last 4-6weeks than he has done in the last 4-6 years,” as quoted on Twitter by TeamTalk journalist James Marshment.
Wearing the number eight shirt on Wednesday night, Phillips was certainly one of the players to come out of the defeat with pass marks. He completed 40 of his 49 passes, which also included more key passes than any other player (WhoScored).
Leeds fans reacted in astonishment to Neville’s claim, hammering the Manchester United icon for his comments on Phillips – with Whites supporters of the opinion that Phillips has clearly learnt more under Bielsa, than he has for England.
