Liam Cooper has been overlooked by Scotland manager Alex McLeish for the upcoming fixtures against Kazakhstan and San Marino – and Leeds United fans are shocked by the decision.
The 27-year-old has been in wonderful form for Leeds this season. He has captained Marcelo Bielsa’s side with aplomb, and been the backbone of a promotion push that sees the Whites sit in second.
Cooper has formed a superb partnership alongside Sweden international Pontus Jansson. The duo have been responsible for seeing Leeds concede just 38 league goals in 36 games.
However, Scotland announced the squad on Tuesday afternoon with Cooper’s name missing. Instead, former Rangers and Aston Villa boss McLeish has picked the likes of Charlie Mulgrew and David Bates.

Blackburn’s Mulgrew is an elder statesman of the Scotland squad, while Bates is starring Germany with Hamburg. John Souttar is up-and-coming at Hearts – keeping Conor Shaughnessy out of the side. Scott McKenna is one of the Scottish Premiership’s best defenders with Aberdeen.
But Cooper – to the belief of many Leeds fans – has been one of the best centre-backs in the Championship this season. He has come a long way since his £500,000 move (Express) from Chesterfield in 2014.
Leeds fans took to Twitter to express their shock at Cooper being overlooked by McLeish. Though some are happy he has remained at Elland Road as it means he will avoid injury, some believe he deserved a call-up.
