Patrick Bamford saw out the entire 90 minutes as Leeds United’s U23 side lost to Manchester City – but Leeds fans were impressed with his return.

Bamford, 28, suffered an ankle injury after the 1-1 draw with Newcastle and has subsequently missed the last nine Premier League matches.

That will be 10 on Tuesday night, as Leeds play host to Crystal Palace. That was planned, though, after playing the entire 3-2 loss to Manchester City.

Bamford and Luke Ayling were included in a side that also included Crysencio Summerville, Lewis Bate and Kristoffer Klaesson.

It was Sam Greenwood that sparkled for Leeds, scoring a penalty after both Ayling and Bamford were involved in winning the spot-kick for the Whites.

Greenwood then got a second with a lovely finish at the near post. City’s 23’s looked good, eventually winning late on – after a mistake from Klaesson.

Cole Palmer scored the winner in injury time, to the disappointment of those from a Leeds persuasion. But many will be glad to see Bamford back.

What did Leeds fans think of Bamford and his U23 display?

He looked sharp. While Bamford did not score on Tuesday night, the ex-Chelsea striker’s hold-up play was superb – albeit against an U23 side.

Bamford also showed a bit of class, and leadership, by allowing captain-for-the-night Greenwood to take the penalty he had helped win.

Leeds fans were impressed and excited in equal measure by Bamford’s comeback performance. He could face Brentford on Sunday afternoon.
