West Bromwich Albion leapfrogged Leeds United and Preston North End to return to the top of the Championship on Monday night with a comfortable win over Stoke City – and Leeds fans were impressed by Romaine Sawyers.
Matt Phillips gave West Brom the lead in the eighth minute against a managerless Stoke, following the board’s decision to axe Nathan Jones. The early goal knocked the stuffing out of Stoke, and it looked as though they gave up trying to equalise.
West Brom enjoyed 62% possession throughout the night as Stoke hardly put up a fight. Cameron Carter-Vickers handed the Baggies the chance to secure the win, with a ridiculous tackle on Grady Diangana inside the penalty area.

Lucky not to be sent off, Tottenham loanee Carter-Vickers could only stand and watch as Hal Robson-Kanu sent goalkeeper Jack Butland the wrong way as the Baggies recorded a 2-0 win at the Britannia Stadium.
Sitting at the base of the Baggies midfield, summer signing Sawyers picked the man-of-the-match award as he started and finished his 15th league appearance of the season – being used by Slaven Bilic in every Championship outing so far.
The Daily Record reported that Leeds were interested in the summer to sign Sayers, though he joined youth side West Brom from Brentford for £2.5million (Sun) instead. Some Leeds fans wished they had won the race for Sawyers.
