Leeds fans discuss Marcelo Bielsa's comments on Kalvin Phillips, amid reports Manchester United are keen
Marcelo Bielsa has discussed the future of Kalvin Phillips in his latest press conference, with Manchester United keen – and Leeds fans have reacted.
Phillips, 25, has emerged as a £60million target for Manchester United. The report also says Manchester City, Chelsea and Liverpool are keeping tabs.
But it is believed that Phillips is happy at Leeds and is open to signing a new contract with the Whites, according to a report from the Daily Star.
Phillips is seen by Leeds fans as a future captain of the Yorkshire club. He has already surpassed 200 appearances in all competitions for Leeds.
Speaking about Phillips amid the reports over his future, Bielsa stated that when he does leave – he will be spoken about as an icon at Elland Road.
“That’s a question Kalvin needs to answer. Of course he’s very valuable player,” Bielsa said. He is loved in the place he was born and belongs.
“When you’re loved where you’re from, the possibilities to be happy increase. It depends on the player. In this situation: two things very clear.
“Phillips will stop playing for Leeds. The moment and way he does it, will convert him as an idol forever. He will know how to do it.”
Bielsa on Phillips: How have Leeds fans reacted, what does he mean?
What Bielsa seems to be saying, is that if Phillips does eventually choose to leave Leeds and further his ambitions – he will do it in the right way.
He states that he is playing for a club and a City that loves, adores him. But that if he chooses to go, he will do so in a way that keeps that love intact.
So, what we can probably deduce, is that Bielsa is saying Phillips is clever enough not to join rivals Manchester United. Alan Smith was lambasted.
That is the opinion of Leeds fans, too – in regards to the message Bielsa is getting across. Many are delighted with Bielsa and his Phillips comments.
