Marcelo Bielsa’s tactics were completely dismantled on Sunday afternoon as Leeds United were battered 6-2 by Manchester United at Old Trafford as the rivalry was restored – but Leeds fans have applauded defender Luke Ayling.

The Whites came into the match following a stunning 5-2 win over Newcastle United on Wednesday night, which pushed Bielsa’s side away from the drop zone for the time being. However, they were right back in the mix come Sunday night.

After three minutes, Leeds were losing 2-0. The midfield failed to track runners and Scott McTominay took full advantage, netting twice inside 200 seconds. Bruno Fernandes got a brace, while Dan James and Victor Lindelof also scored.

Leeds did score thanks to a header from Liam Cooper, who then suffered an injury – adding to the club’s centre-back crisis with Robin Koch and Diego Llorente also injured. Stuart Dallas arguably scored the best goal of the game.

Ayling was already covering at centre-back alongside Cooper and was given a handful, marking Anthony Martial while also dealing with the likes of Fernandes, Marcus Rashford and Dan James. However, he came out of the game with pass marks.

Despite Leeds conceding six times, many supporters have discussed 29-year-old star Ayling’s performance and praised the former Bristol City and Arsenal man – with one claiming he “played his heart out”.
