Leeds fans discuss Jack Wilshere on Twitter after West Ham United release

Leeds United failed to bring in a central midfielder in deadline day after Michael Cuisance’s medical failed and it is believed that the newly-promoted Premier League side remain on the lookout for such – and Leeds fans have discussed Jack Wilshere.

The Whites went into this summer’s window with a number of positions that required strengthening. Competition for Patrick Bamford was needed – Victor Orta answered. In came Rodrigo for a club-record fee from Valencia.

Ben White and Gaetano Berardi needed replacing at centre-back. Robin Koch was bought from Freiburg, and then Diego Llorente from Real Sociedad. Marcelo Bielsa wanted a winger and got one – albeit on deadline day – in Raphinha.

But a central midfielder has not been signed. The Whites have been linked with numerous options in the role alongside Mateusz Klich, with Rodrigo De Paul, Ruslan Malinovskyi, Teun Koopmeiners and Todd Cantwell all options.

Cuisance looked as though it was going to get over the line, only for the French ace to fail a medical. Leeds can still buy players from EFL clubs, meaning Norwich’s Cantwell and any other attacking midfielders from the Football League remain an option.

But free agents can also be signed. Wilshere, 28, confirmed he had left West Ham with a post on his social media channels. He informed fans that he had been fit for the majority of 2018 – but was not given a chance to prove that by David Moyes.

So, should Leeds move? Upon the Whites returning to the Premier League for the first time since 2004, they lacked Premier League experience – and still do. Only four players had any kind of experience in England’s top flight after promotion.

Patrick Bamford had one season, while Helder Costa played for Wolves during 2018-19, but was largely used as a substitute. Adam Forshaw impressed with Middlesbrough but is injured at the moment, while Pablo Hernandez played for Swansea.

England’s top flight is a tricky, and unforgiving place. Though they have enjoyed a great start, they need a player that can help them when the inevitable bump in the road comes up – and Wilshere could be that man, given his 182 Premier League games.

Not only that, but the England international fills the last gap in a Leeds side that has taken the Premier League by storm. Tyler Roberts and Rodrigo have been used by Bielsa since Pablo Hernandez suffered an injury, but the gap remains.

Some would argue, too, that he is certainly a Bielsa-style player. He would offer versatility – showing ability to play in Kalvin Phillips’ role, to replace Klich or make the number eight position alongside Klich his own.

He is still only 28, with bags of Premier League experience. He is fit, he is perfect for Bielsa’s style of play, and he is available for nothing. Wilshere could be the ideal last addition for Leeds this summer – the missing piece in the jigsaw.

Some Leeds fans think so, and have discussed the possibility of luring the former Bournemouth, West Ham and Arsenal midfielder – who has the same agent as Forshaw (TransferMarkt) – to Elland Road following his Hammers release.
