Leeds fans discuss Ian Poveda’s cameo role against Liverpool on Monday night

Leeds United secured a late 1-1 draw against Liverpool on Monday evening at Elland Road and even had numerous chances to beat the reigning Premier League champions – and Leeds fans have raved about substitute Ian Poveda.

The Whites came into the match full of confidence having beaten Manchester City in their previous outing – despite going down to 10 men. But the pre-match drama was nothing to do with Leeds, and instead to do with the Reds.

It was Sadio Mane that opened the scoring in the first half and Liverpool probably edged the first 45, but Leeds were so much better in the second half. Patrick Bamford missed a one on one in the first half, and then hit the bar.

Jack Harrison, Helder Costa and plenty of others had chances but it was a very unlike Leeds goal to win – Diego Llorente heading home his first goal for Leeds from a corner. Poveda came on just after the hour mark, for Costa.

It was the 21-year-old’s 11th appearance in the Premier League for Leeds, but the ex-Manchester City man looked lively and dangerous with the ball at his feet – causing both Liverpool full-backs to back peddle when in possession.

He had not featured in the Premier League since January, but Leeds fans applauded Poveda for his cameo role on Twitter.
