Leeds United’s Under-23 side moved to within just one win of securing promotion from Premier League 2 Division 2 with a masterful 5-0 win over West Brom’s reserves – and Leeds fans have discussed the performance of Ian Poveda.
Joe Gelhardt stole the show as he took his goal tally for the club’s Under-23 side to 11 goals in 15 Premier League 2 matches with a hat-trick, two of which were from the penalty spot. The other, a well-placed finish from the left side of the penalty area.
Sam Greenwood scored a delightful free-kick, while Crysencio Summerville was excellent again, winning a penalty, setting up Gelhardt’s strike and scoring himself – after Poveda beautifully found him with a incisive pass through the defence.
Poveda, 21, has endured a frustrating season – managing just 10 substitute appearances in the Premier League, and has since failed to play for the first team since January, suffering an ankle injury that ruled him out six top-flight league outings.
But he looked back to his best on Monday afternoon, as he drove at the West Brom defence and helped Mark Jackson’s side put The Baggies to the sword. While his end product is still questionable, Leeds fans raved about his display on Twitter after the win.
