Leeds United’s Under-21 side crashed out of the Papa John’s Trophy on Wednesday night after suffering a 3-0 defeat to League One side Blackpool at Bloomfield Road – but Leeds fans have praised defender Charlie Cresswell.

Cresswell, 18, has been a regular in Mark Jackson’s side this season – starting six of the Under-23’s eight Premier League 2 fixtures. He is one of the most highly-rated teenage stars currently on the books at Elland Road.

He started at centre-back alongside Nohan Kenneh on Wednesday night, but was unable to prevent Blackpool from cruising to a 3-0 win – despite Leeds fielding a strong side that included first-team stars.

Kiko Casilla, Leif Davis and Ian Poveda all started while summer additions Crysencio Summerville, Joe Gelhardt and Sam Greenwood were fielded in attack. But Blackpool were far too good for Leeds’ reserve side.

Dan Kemp opened the scoring for Neil Critchley’s side, before an own goal from Cody Drameh made it two. A late effort from Ethan Robson made it three – despite a red card being shown to Blackpool’s Cameron Antwi.

Leeds fans reacted on Twitter to Cresswell’s display, with many applauding the defender – who is the son of ex-Whites striker Richard Cresswell – despite the heavy defeat to the League One side.
