Leeds United have lost regular left-back Ezgjan Alioski for the rest of the season – and some of the club’s supporters on Twitter believe Gaetano Berardi is the man to step up in his absence.
The Whites have confirmed (official website) that Alioski will be sidelined for the remainder of the campaign.
Marcelo Bielsa’s side will need to find a solution at full-back quickly, with two league games remaining and the likelihood of the play-offs ahead of them.
The Yorkshire giants are still in the hunt for automatic promotion, but will need a major results swing their way and face an Aston Villa side next that have won 10 games in a row.
There are a number of players that could replace Alioski and Barry Douglas would be ideal, but he’s already sidelined for the rest of the season.
A selection of Leeds fans on social media have picked out Berardi as the man to come into the XI, with him getting the nod ahead of Stuart Dallas and youngster Leif Davis.
Berardi is an experienced defender that has shown versatility during his time at Elland Road to play at right-back, centre-back and also left-back.
The 30-year-old is a no-nonsense enforcer that is a real fan favourite and plays on the edge with his competitive streak.
He’s only made 12 appearances across all competitions this campaign due to injury problems, but could still have a crucial role to play.
Here are some Leeds fans suggesting that Berardi could help solve the left-back problem:
I’ve seen Berardi Play at left back a good few times for the U23s he’s done well & has no problem getting up and down the line,, & he’s much better at left/right back,,not a fan of him at centreBack when we are stuck #imo #lufc

I know he’s had a few shocking games back at centre back, but given the left back position injuries – is it worth putting Berardi in there?

Loss of form, injuries, mistakes, bad luck. Time to believe again @maverickwhites The best Leeds side any of us have seen for years. Get Roofe back in up front. Stick a rocket up Pontus’ arse. Cheer Pablo up. Phillips back in. Berardi at left back. We are sorted.

Let’s hope this is preparation for playing Berardi at left back for the rest of the season

Berardi to come in at left back and save the season.

I’d rather Berardi at LB than Dallas….why persists in playing Dallas there I don’t know

Surely Berardi is an obvious replacement. I don’t understand why Dallas came on ahead of him yesterday
