Leeds fans are expecting a Premier League debut against Newcastle
Leeds United take on Newcastle on Friday evening and fans are expecting a Premier League debut amid a defensive crisis – for Charlis Cresswell.
The Whites come into the match in a bit of a mess. Four Premier League games in, and Marcelo Bielsa’s side have failed to pick up a single win.
Just two points have come so far, though two of those four games have come against two of last seasons top four – Liverpool and Man United.
Newcastle is arguably the club’s best chance of three points so far – with the Toon themselves yet to win a league game. But there is a defensive crisis.
Pascal Struijk is suspended for his red card, after dislocating Harvey Elliott’s ankle. Diego Llorente and Robin Koch are struggling with muscle injuries.
Luke Ayling is likely to partner Liam Cooper at centre-back, with Jamie Shackleton at right-back. But Leeds fans have other ideas.
Cresswell to start: Bielsa curveball with Leeds teen at Newcastle?
Bielsa is renowned for playing a back three against a side that play two up top. Newcastle are no strangers to using two strikers.
But Callum Wilson is injured. It remains to be seen, but Bielsa may feel that given it is Ayling, he might want to play a back three to bolster the defence.
Cresswell, 19, has been sensational for the 23’s – captaining them to PL2 Division 2 promotion last season. He played in last season’s Carabao Cup.
But is yet to make his Premier League debut for Leeds. Now, Leeds fans are expecting and predicting Cresswell to start on Tyneside come Friday night.
