Stuart McKinstry scored an excellent brace as Leeds United’s Under-23 side strengthened their lead at the top of the Premier League 2 Division 2 table – and Leeds fans have applauded the Scotsman’s efforts from the right wing.
It was first against second on Monday afternoon at Thorp Arch as Leeds welcomed Reading to the training ground. Taking to a pitch that still had some lines from Marcelo Bielsa’s pattern play in training, and the two sides played out a close 40 minutes.
But towards the end of the first half, Leeds made the breakthrough. Starting with Kiko Casilla, some nice play between Olly Casey and Leif Davis saw Nohan Kenneh spread the ball, eventually seeing Crysencio Summerville cross for Liam McCarron.

The Dutchman’s cross was perfect and McCarron met it with aplomb. It was two just moments later, this time McKinstry scoring. The £400,000 (Sun) signing from Motherwell netted his first PL2 goals of the season, in what was his 12th outing.
Indeed, the striker firstly slammed home a left-footed effort after good work from the ever-impressive Gelhardt. In the second half, Leeds came under more pressure but a mistake from the Reading goalkeeper allowed Gelhardt to capitalise.
He tackled the Royals keeper, teeing up McKinstry who calmly finished from 25 yards with the side of his foot. The scoreline remained the same, extending the Whites’ 13-point lead at the top of the division. Fans were impressed with McKinstry.
