Leeds fans applaud Barry Douglas after FA Cup defeat to Arsenal

Barry Douglas was handed his first Leeds United start since August and the left-back did not disappoint as he impressed against Arsenal in the third round of the FA Cup – and Leeds supporters have reacted to his performance.

It was Arsenal youngster Reiss Nelson that landed the telling blow, bundling the ball over the line to score the only goal of the game early in the second half. Leeds will now concentrate on getting promotion, while Arsenal travel to Bournemouth.

But it was Leeds that dominated proceedings in the first half. Patrick Bamford hit the bar, Gjanni Alioski drew a wonder save from Emi Martinez while the Argentine goalkeeper also denied Jack Harrison on multiple occasions, too.

Douglas, meanwhile, was tasked with keeping Arsenal’s club-record signing – £72million summer recruit Nicolas Pepe quiet throughout. Indeed, Ivory Coast international Pepe did very little and was eventually taken off in injury time.

Former Wolves defender Douglas, who signed for Leeds in the summer of 2018 for £3million (Sky Sports), looked comfortable on the ball and strong in the tackle. He also contributed heavily going forward – looking like a regular in the side.

Leeds fans were thoroughly impressed by Douglas, who has struggled to reach his best since joining the Whites. Many believe he is likely to now keep his place on the left side of defence, ahead of Saturday’s Yorkshire derby against Sheffield Wednesday.
