Leeds fans and Kalvin Phillips react as footage emerges on Twitter of Illan Meslier

Leeds United supporters were understandably delighted when Pablo Hernandez prodded an effort into the top corner on Saturday to score just before the hour mark, and beat Reading 1-0 – but Illan Meslier was just as relieved on the subs bench.

The clash against Mark Bowen’s Reading was shaping up to be another example of Leeds dominating both possession and chances, but lacking the finishing touch. However, Hernandez was on hand to cut inside and toe poke the ball home.

Leeds held on to a second successive 1-0 win after Luke Ayling’s goal saw the Whites beat Bristol City last weekend. It sees the Whites go five points clear of third-placed Fulham, who failed to beat Derby County at Craven Cottage.

Supporters in the south stand went into meltdown as Hernandez scored, but footage has since emerged on social media of substitute goalkeeper Illan Meslier doing exactly the same on the substitutes bench (as per LS11’s ‘Bielsa Cam’).

Meslier has only played once for Leeds, shining in the 1-0 defeat to Arsenal. He remains on loan from French side Lorient, but is yet to break past Kiko Casilla into the starting eleven despite plenty of criticism for the ex-Real Madrid goalkeeper.

According to Ouest France, Leeds must spend £5m to sign Meslier permanently from Lorient and it remains to be seen if such a deal will be completed. Many, though, are fond of Meslier and even more so after his celebrating – including Kalvin Phillips.
