Leeds fans amazed by Premier League display from £15m striker

Chris Wood starred yet again last night in the Premier League for Burnley – and some Leeds United fans on Twitter were left amazed by the individual performance from their ex-player.

Wood, who Burnley signed from Leeds in 2017 for £15million (Sky Sports), has become a key figure at Turf Moor in recent years. The 29-year-old is a powerhouse centre-forward who fits perfectly Sean Dyche’s trusted 4-4-2 formation, and has proven to be a consistent performer at Premier League level.

He scored in Monday night’s 2-0 win for the Clarets away to Fulham at Craven Cottage, which secured yet another season of top-flight football at Turf Moor.

Wood now has 12 goals in 30 league appearances this season, including five in his last three games.

The in-form New Zealand international powered in a stunning half-volley yesterday against Fulham to condemn his London opponents to relegation, and his finishing is very much underrated across the country by neutral supporters.

He’s now just three goals shy of the 50-goal mark in the Premier League, which would be some achievement for someone who spent a lot of the earlier stages of his career developing his game in the second-tier.

A selection of Leeds supporters on social media were left praising their former player for his latest league display.

One claimed they would love to see how he would fare in the current Whites XI.

Wood departed Elland Road a year before Marcelo Bielsa took charge of the Yorkshire giants, and the superb Argentine boss helped completely transform the team by implementing a high intensity philosophy that has seen them excel during their first year back in the Premier League.

There is no doubt Wood works his socks off for 90 minute each game, plus he possesses great technical ability and finishing instincts around the box. However, first-choice Leeds striker Patrick Bamford has taken his game to levels most couldn’t see coming.

There can be a strong case made around Burnley’s frontman Wood being one of the most underrated strikers around, but whether he could do it at one of the division’s “big clubs” is a mystery. As well as that, he may not be the talisman at one of the clubs competing higher up the league.

A lot of Burnley’s offensive plans are centred around the two strikers, and it’s very rare nowadays in the top division that clubs line up with a forward pairing.

He should be more respected for his abilities as a player, but it’s very much a case of he’s found a perfect fit.

Wood is a throwback to the kind of strikers that made up the Premier League during its early years and is proof that even in today’s game, where most are focused on trying to be skilful attackers, you can be extremely effective with raw power to unsettle defenders.

Leeds fans still speak very highly about their ex-forward which is no surprise given he netted 44 goals in 88 appearances during his time with them.

Here are some Whites fans waxing lyrical about Wood’s latest Burnley performance:
