Leeds United’s Under-23 side remained at the top of Premier League 2’s second tier with a stunning 6-1 win over Fulham at Thorp Arch – and Leeds supporters took to Twitter to applaud the performance of Charlie Cresswell.
The Whites came into the match off the back of the senior side losing 6-2 to Manchester United. Mark Jackson named a side that included numerous first-team players, and it certainly showed.
Tyler Roberts, Leif Davis, Ian Poveda, Pablo Hernandez and Helder Costa all started and it was Wales international Roberts that opened the scoring – flicking a Costa corner into the back of the net.
Costa laid on a second, again from a corner – this time finding 18-year-old giant Cresswell who headed home brilliantly. A third came from a Fulham defender, after good work by Hernandez. Leeds were on fire.
Number four came in the form of Hernandez himself, after a lovely bit of play from Cresswell who found Poveda. Five came after Joe Gelhardt missed a penalty, and Bobby Kamwa tapped home before Gelhardt got one himself.
Leeds then scored a brilliant seventh, with Poveda providing another assist. A great run from Cody Drameh fed Poveda who cut back to Costa – the Portugal international more than deserving his strike.
Leeds could be without Liam Cooper after his injury against Manchester United – joining Diego Llorente and Robin Koch on the sidelines. A centre-back is needed, then, and Cresswell certainly staked his claim.
The towering Leeds defender – son of former Whites striker Richard – was brilliant throughout and having made his debut for the first team against Hull earlier this season, fans want him to replace Cooper.
