Helder Costa came off the bench to help Leeds United secure a 3-0 win over Southampton on Tuesday night, a win that sees Marcelo Bielsa’s side return to the top half of the Premier League table – and fans are amazed by the winger’s resurgence.

Costa, 27, started the season in Bielsa’s first eleven, but dropped out following the signing of the brilliant Raphinha who has been excellent following his move to Elland Road from Rennes. It has seen Costa warm the bench of late.

The Portugal international has failed to start a Premier League match since early November, but his last three substitute appearances have shown signs of improvement. A goal in the 4-2 defeat to Arsenal helped, and he was lively against Wolves.

On Tuesday night, he replaced Jack Harrison at half-time – as he did against Arsenal – and he changed the impetus of the game. He laid on an assist for Stuart Dallas’ goal, and won the free-kick which Raphinha curled into the back of the net.

Costa, who is one of the club’s best-paid players on £32,500 a week, according to Spotrac, is pushing for a start and his second-half performance against Southampton will have given Bielsa a real headache ahead of the clash against Villa on Saturday.

Leeds supporters have responded on Twitter to Costa’s display on Tuesday night and many were stunned at his efforts – somewhat surprised to see him return from being dropped from the starting XI to shining, and potentially in line to start soon.
