Leeds director of football Victor Orta has told Italian outlet TuttoMercatoWeb that there are a “few options” ahead of the January window, but believes it will be a quiet window – before considering Liverpool star and Leeds fan James Milner.
Leeds brought in six players in the summer, all of which joined on loan. Jack Harrison and Jack Clarke returned on loan, while Illan Meslier, Helder Costa, Ben White and Eddie Nketiah all joined. Costa is set to sign a permanent deal next summer.
The Whites are only allowed five loanees in the matchday squad, meaning one of the six on-loan players has to miss out. Tottenham loanee Clarke has missed the most matches. If Leeds are to sign a player in January, it is likely to be permanent.
Leeds fans want signings to boost their promotion push but Orta does not believe it will be busy in the new year. Orta was also asked about the potential return of Milner from Liverpool – but stated that he does not name names.
TBR’s view – Should Leeds be looking to sign players in January?
Certainly, Leeds could do with a couple of purchases. At centre-back, Leeds desperately need cover with only Ben White and Liam Cooper the recognised first-team centre-backs. Daniel Ayala has been linked, as his Middlesbrough contract runs down.
Leeds are well stocked in other positions, with a lot of Leeds players able to show versaility including the likes of Stuart Dallas, Gjanni Alioski, Jamie Shackleton and more. A centre-back, though, should be on Leeds’ agenda.
