Leeds could remedy costly flaw by striking deal for Costa

According to the BBC, Leeds United are plotting an ambitious move for Wolves attacker Helder Costa.

The Whites just missed out on promotion to the Premier League last season, despite having led the Championship for much of the campaign. However, with manager Marcelo Bielsa still in charge at Elland Road, there are plenty of reasons for Leeds fans to be optimistic heading into the new campaign.

Bielsa will know that his side needs improvements to be made this summer if they are to actually secure promotion at the second time of asking. Bringing Costa to the Yorkshire club would certainly represent such a step up. That being said, convincing Wolves to part with the 25-year-old winger may not be easy.

The Portuguese attacker was a regular for Nuno Espirito Santo’s side in the top flight last season. However, he failed to replicate the form he showed in the Championship in the prior campaign.

Wolves may feel that they have moved to a level beyond Costa’s reach, which could open the door for Leeds this summer.

TBR’s view

If there is any possibility of bringing Costa to Elland Road, then Bielsa must jump at it. Ultimately, a lack of quality squad depth and killer instinct in the final third cost his side dearly last season. The arrival of the once-capped Portugal international would go some way to remedying that situation.

Costa has already played a big part in one Championship promotion campaign. Leeds fans will be hoping to see him reprise that role in white this season.
